e-Prescribing Implementation Planning is Initiated

The Centricity EMR – e-Prescribing application, which allows providers and authorized support staff to securely send prescriptions and approve or deny prescription refill requests from within Centricity EMR, via a connection to the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange operated by SureScripts and RxHub, has already begun.

The major functions available with Centricity EMR e-Prescribing include:
  • sending an electronic prescription to a pharmacy
  • responding to a refill request from a pharmacy
  • sending a query to verify prescription drug insurance eligibility and applying responses to determine coverage
  • capturing/displaying formulary information from pharmacy or PBM (Pharmacy Benefits Manager)
  • sending a query for medication fill history to PBM or pharmacy to capture and display medication list from the EHR
The e-Prescribing application provides many benefits to patients, pharmacies and providers, such as reducing adverse drug reactions and deaths, the ability to view a patient’s entire medication history regardless of where the patient is seen, reducing the time it takes for processing prescriptions, and the ability to see insurance company formularies when writing/renewing prescriptions, which facilitates proper prescribing the first time.

There are currently two incentive programs that MSU providers can participate in once Centricity EMR e-Prescribing is operational:
1.) CMS e-prescribing incentive program – Providers who use a CCHIT certified e-prescribing system and meet criteria can receive a 2% annual incentive payment. The Centricity EMR e-Prescribing system is CCHIT certified. Thus, HealthTeam providers who use it will be eligible for the incentive.

2.) Blue Cross/Blue Shield PGIP e-prescribing incentive program – MSU has signed up for incentive payments for HealthTeam clinics/providers that use the Centricity e-prescribing software for prescriptions instead of other means. Monthly reports that track e-prescribing use are provided for incentive payments.
Health Information Technology has invited several clinics and providers to participate in a multidisciplinary workgroup that is charged with developing standard workflows, recommending policies and procedures and advising implementation and training strategies for e-prescribing. The workgroups are meeting during the summer. An implementation date will be established through this workgroup.

We will send out periodic updates as these projects are being implemented.
