MSU Plays Role in Electronically Linking Medical Records

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Better, safer health care is in store for mid-Michigan patients thanks to the Capital Area Regional Health Information Organization, which for the first time will allow Ingham, Clinton and Eaton county physicians and providers to exchange patient records electronically.

Area health care providers, including those at the Michigan State University HealthTeam, are downloading data into the secure computer system right now. The RHIO is expected to start exchanging health records beginning in January. All participating health care providers will be part of the system within three months.

"Four-and-a-half years in the making, the creation of the RHIO represents an extraordinary community effort that puts mid-Michigan on the leading edge of health information exchange," said MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon, a staunch supporter of the electronic medical record effort. "The MSU HealthTeam and the colleges of Human Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine are enthusiastic supporters of this important effort to ensure patient safety and bring health care into the 21st century."

The Capital Area RHIO is one of 42 such health information exchanges in the nation. It is the first RHIO in Michigan to be deployed and sustained financially by a network of state and community agencies, businesses and providers.

"This organization will save lives and save money by making sure physicians and other health care providers can easily access a patient's complete medical record," said Brian McCardel, a Lansing orthopedist and chairperson of the Capital Area RHIO. "No more scrambling to collect medical data in an emergency, or when you're referred to a specialist. No more guessing about previous medical treatments when you go to a new provider."

The local transition to electronic health records is part of a nationwide move to improve the way health care is delivered; the state of Michigan is constructing the infrastructure to ultimately enable the statewide exchange of health records.
