Former Hoops Star’s Fashion Show Raises Funds for Cancer Research
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Focusing on research into hidden cancers, the Aitch Foundation - led by former MSU women's basketball player Lauren Aitch - is kicking off fundraising efforts for its second annual Hidden Key Fashion Show at a mix-and-mingle event Jan. 26.
As part of the kick-off at Mitchell's Fish Market in Lansing Township, Aitch provided updates on the foundation, which she formed in 2010 in memory of her father, and its financial beneficiary, the MSU HealthTeam.
The second annual fashion show, which raised $10,000 last year, is set for May 18.
"I am very excited for this year's event," said Aitch, who played professionally in Denmark upon graduating from Michigan State University in 2010 after playing in 135 games, the second most in team history. "The support and commitment from the MSU community and all of mid-Michigan has been amazing. We are working hard to educate people on the importance of finding hidden cancers."
In 2011, more than 571,000 Americans are expected to die of cancer, and in Michigan, more than 57,000 new cases of cancer are expected this year. But about half of new cancers can be prevented or detected earlier by enhanced screening, and of course, the earlier cancer is caught, the better the outcome, Aitch said.
